High 20

A One Act Play

Blue Velvet, as herself
20 year old hipster, as "High 20"
22 year old hipster, as "Half Jew"

Opening Scene:
Blue Velvet is quietly having a cigarette in a dark, rat infested alley in a popular hipster neighborhood in Chicago.  She is approached by a very young hipster for a light for his marijuana cigarette.

High 20:  I love your glasses.  Do you want some? (Offers marijuana cigarette)

BV:  Thanks.  I don't smoke pot.  Do you have any harder drugs?

High 20:  I'm Luke.

BV:  I'm Blue Velvet.

High 20:  Do you want to have a drink?

BV:  No. (Finishes cigarette and goes inside of a nearby bar.)

High 20:  (Follows BV into the bar)  I thought you said that you didn't want to have a drink?

BV:  Oh, I just meant not with you.

High 20:  Well my friends and I are at the bar next door.  You should meet us.  Really, please come over.  I will buy your drinks.

BV: Okay.  (A lie)

--Fade to Black--

Moments later, BV is approached by another young hipster.

Half Jew:  Hi.  I'm half-Jewish.

BV:  Me too

Half Jew:  Dad or mom's side?

BV:  Dad

Half Jew:  That doesn't count.

BV:  I didn't say it did.  I don't identify as Jewish.

Half Jew:  What do you do?

BV:  I'm a standup comedian

Half Jew:  I have a joke for you.

BV:  (Rolls eyes) Okay, what is it?

Half Jew:  It's about how tourists are terrorists.  You know, because Chicago has a lot of tourists and, to me, they are terrorists.

BV:  That isn't funny, or even a joke for that matter.  You must have a low IQ.

Half Jew:  Well maybe you can do something with it.  You can have it for your act.

BV:  I will not be using it in my act, or ever repeating it to anyone.

Half Jew:  I'm going to get you a beer!  You are very pretty!

BV:  Can you watch my drink?  I'm going out for a cigarette.

BV exits the bar and quickly heads down the rat infested alley and doesn't turn back. She waves to the rats and tells them to "Have lots of rat babies and take over this fucking town!  I love you!"
